The
Tubman-Chavez Multicultural Center has a long history of serving
as a community center and gathering place for residents of southeastern
San Diego. Unfortunately, in the summer of 2005, Tubman-Chavez was
abandoned by its previous operator and had been closed to the public
for nearly a year while falling into disrepair and becoming a community
eyesore. Community expectation of the resident-led continued operation
of Tubman-Chavez has been repeatedly voiced by residents, and concern
over its decline and closure was widely discussed. In response to
this situation, the City of San Diego, the owner of the property,
issued an RFP for a new leaseholder and operator of the facility.
The Coalition of Neighborhood Councils
(CNC) submitted a successful proposal to the City which will honor
and significantly enhance the
historical and community expected use of the Tubman-Chavez Multicultural
Center. In late 2003, the San Diego City Council selected the CNC’s “Village
Center at Euclid and Market” proposal for designation as one
of five City of Villages (COV) pilot projects. The Tubman-Chavez
Multicultural Center sits at the heart of the Village Center at Euclid
and Market.
The CNC’s proposal continues its demonstrated commitment to
maintain a vital and vibrant Tubman-Chavez Multicultural Center at
the heart
of the community for years to come.
Under the day-to-day management
and operation of the CNC, the Tubman-Chavez Center has once again
become the gathering place of the community,
alive with events, activities, and programs of superb quality that
simultaneously build community. Specifically, children, youth,
seniors, families, groups and individuals in southeastern San Diego
and beyond
will be provided with the opportunity to benefit from the following
proposed programs and activities available at the Tubman-Chavez
Multicultural Center:
- Arts and Culture
- Business Training
- Computers and Technology
- Educational Services
- Employment Placement
- Financial Literacy
- Health Education
- Recreational Activities
- Social and Professional Gatherings
These programs and activities are coordinated by the CNC and provided
in collaboration with other community-based organizations offering
their existing quality services at the Tubman-Chavez Multicultural
Center.
The Tubman Chavez facility is available for rental by the
public for social gatherings and activities. |
