The mission of the Coalition of Neighborhood Councils is to support neighborhood councils, community-based organizations, and residents to create, maintain, and strengthen vibrant neighborhoods. The Coalition of Neighborhood Councils, or the CNC as it is more commonly known, is a resident group made up of the neighborhood councils within the under-invested southeastern San Diego area. Created in 1994 as a neighborhood unification and empowerment strategy, the CNC since its inception has been committed to providing community leaders with the skills and knowledge needed to operate effective community councils and bring about sustainable neighborhood change. With its community development partner, the Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation, CNC is bringing residents to the table to envision, plan, and develop a new “urban village” in the 45-acres surrounding Market Creek Plaza, located at Market and Euclid in southeastern San Diego. |
The CNC acts as a resource and information-sharing network for the neighborhood councils, supporting and linking their efforts to resources both within and outside of the community. Additionally, the CNC serves as a forum for community and citywide concerns and creates a united voice for residents in southeastern San Diego. The long-term outcome of CNC is a community of inclusion that is built on a strong social and economic foundation, which results in cultural understanding, unity, community pride, and involvement. The CNC is not a social service agency; instead it is a social advocacy/social action group, with a goal of building social, political and economic capital within southeastern San Diego. Recently, CNC was awarded a contract by the City of San Diego to locate its offices at and manage the Tubman Chavez Multicultural Center. This location is ideal and is quickly becoming a new hub for programs, activities, and events in southeastern San Diego. |
There are twenty-three ethnically diverse, individual communities that make up southeastern San Diego. Each of these communities has a neighborhood council that acts as the leadership for its respective community. These neighborhood councils are working to address issues that affect their communities. Some are more organized than others, but generally the emphasis of these neighborhood councils is to create a system to educate, train, and connect local residents with solutions, resources, and neighbors. |
