The CNC is committed to the redevelopment of southeastern San Diego, and we believe that comprehensive community development must create greater access to healthcare, employment, education, affordable housing options and safe neighborhoods. CNC's Community Development Department spearheads our efforts and builds our role with residents in the healthy development of the community.
Distinguishing the CNC's Community Development Department from other traditional community development corporations is a resident-led approach, as well as a strategic focus on eliminating "place-based" health disparities attributable to differences in access to the social, economic and environmental resources necessary for individual and community health. The existence of these health disparities and the role of place have been increasingly documented, most notably in the Healthy People 2010 report from the US Department of Health and Human Services. In an effort to reduce these health disparities within CNC's target southeastern San Diego neighborhoods, our Community Development Department proactively trains and works with residents to become advocates to improve the presence of resources that are necessary for health and well-being. We do so by integrating measurable and actionable ways to meet those needs through urban development projects organized by the CNC and its partners. Additionally, the CNC monitors other development projects in southeastern San Diego and advocates with residents for the inclusion of features and elements that protect and promote health. |
